Dinner and a Movie Goes Virtual

OnFocus – In light of COVID-19, “Dinner and a Movie” will be held virtually with Professor Julie Tharp. A Continuing Education course through UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield, the dinners combine lesser-known films with a rich menu inspired by the subject. To support local restaurants, the class has arranged for meals to be available for pick-up prior to class.

Participants can pick up food, log in to the zoom meeting, and enjoy the film and discussion to follow. Those not from the area are welcome to register for the film/discussion only.

The Hate You Give: A young woman witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend by a police officer. This film provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the events of spring 2020. It is based on the best-selling novel by Angie Thomas. Choose from Cajun BBQ shrimp, blackened catfish or BBQ beef brisket Po’ Boy on a fresh roll with kettle chips. Sept. 15 or 17 | 6-9 p.m.

The Farewell: The Farewell follows a Chinese family whose grandmother is dying. The family throws impromptu wedding to gather before she passes. A comedy of warmth and honesty, we will enjoy some symbolic Chinese food from the China Chef including crab rangoon, longevity noodles, roast barbecue pork, cashew chicken, Szechwan green beans, vegetable fried rice, and almond cookies. Oct. 13 OR 15 | 6-9 p.m.

Roma: An artful, black and white film, set against the political turmoil of the 1970s, Roma is an intimate look into domestic strife and social hierarchy. Enjoy a taste of authentic Mexican from El Mezcal. The meal includes three different street tacos, al pastor (marinated pork), chorizo (Mexican sausage) and carne asada (grilled steak) with rice and beans. Nov. 17 OR 19 | 6-9 p.m.

English Professor Julie Tharp began her dinners in the ‘90s by teaching a Continuing Education course on foodie films: Babette’s Feast, Eat, Drink, Man, Woman, and Like Water for Chocolate. Two she prepared simple meals for, and then ordered Chinese takeout for the third. Read more OnFocus HERE.
