Deputy Olig Earns Medal of Honor From Marathon County Sheriff

MARATHON COUNTY, WI (OnFocus) – Deputy Nathan Olig of the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office was awarded the Medal of Honor by Marathon County SHeriff Scott Parks.

A statement from the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office reads:

“On August 13, 2021 at approximately 10:30 p.m., Deputy Olig was patrolling an area in the Village of Maine. Deputy Olig had responded to this area in an effort to assist the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office who had lost contact with a fleeing vehicle.

“Deputy Olig observed a vehicle parked at a car dealership near County Rd. WW. Unknown to Deputy Olig at the time, this vehicle was the vehicle that had eluded the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

“As Deputy Olig was preparing to make contact with the occupant of the vehicle, a male subject exited the driver’s side of the vehicle and began to fire upon Deputy Olig. Deputy Olig returned fire, striking the suspect and ending the encounter.

“Following the shooting, Deputy Olig and other responding deputies rendered aide to the suspect and a bystander who was also injured during the exchange of gunfire. The quick actions of Deputy Olig resulted in the preservation of life for both parties.

“Placing himself in imminent personal danger and for his calm response under extraordinary circumstances, Deputy Olig was awarded the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office Medal of Honor by Sheriff Scott Parks.”
