College roundup: Updates on Johnson, Holm, Miner, Friedli

A number of former local high school athletes have moved on to the next level and are playing sports collegiately across the country.

Periodically, focusonmarshfield.com will publish a College Sports Roundup updating readers of some of those local athletes’ exploits at the collegiate level.

Johnson, a senior, has played in all 12 matches this season for the Eagles and leads the team with 147 kills, 3.42 kills per set, and 26 service aces, while also ranking second on the team in digs with 150.

Johnson had a season-high 21 kills in a 3-2 win over St. Norbert College on Sept. 15.

La Crosse, 8-4 overall and 1-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, will play at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational on Friday and Saturday, taking on Elmhurst (Ill.) College, Coe (Iowa) College, and Wheaton (Ill.) College.

Holm sees time for Carroll soccer

Holm has played in four games this season for Carroll, making three starts. He has allowed nine goals while saving 11 of 24 shots.

His best start came against Dubuque (Iowa) College on Aug. 31, when he made five saves.

Carroll (0-7-1) plays at Carthage College on Saturday in Kenosha.

Miner shines for Carthage cross country

Miner finished 16th out of 196 runners at the Aurora (Ill.) Spartan Classic on Sept. 7, helping Carthage to a fourth-place finish. She finished the course in a career-best time of 24:17.3.

Miner took 71st in Carthage’s meet at Wheaton (Ill.) College on Sept. 15, running in 24:22.4 as Carthage finished 10th.

Miner, who was a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin academic all-conference selection in 2017, also ran track for Carthage last year, finishing ninth in the 1,500 meters at the outdoor conference meet in May.

Carthage will compete at the UW-Parkside Invitational on Saturday.

Friedli scores first career goal for St. Mary’s
Klaus Friedli, a 2017 Marshfield High School grad, is a sophomore forward on the St. Mary’s University men’s soccer team. St. Mary’s is located in Winona, Minn.

Friedli has played in six games for St. Mary’s (3-4), scoring on his only shot attempt of the season in a 4-1 win over Crown (Minn.) College on Sept. 4.

Friedli played in 14 games last season for St. Mary’s, scoring no points.

St. Mary’s hosts Augsburg (Minn.) University on Saturday.
