Colby outlasts Spencer/Columbus in Cloverbelt Clash

The Colby Hornets survived overtime in Spencer to stay undefeated in the Cloverbelt Conference with a 28-22 win.

Colby would get on the board less than two minutes into the game with a 25-yard touchdown run by Tyler Klement, Brent Jeske would kick the PAT for a 7-0 lead. Spencer would respond with 5:00 left in the first with a 5 yard run by Eden Jacobson, Austin Bacon would run in the 2 point conversion to give Spencer an 8-7 lead. That lead would not stand long as 3:50 later Roman Schmitt would throw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Karl, Harley Schmelzer would kick the PAT giving Colby a 14-8 lead at the end of the first.

Most of the second quarter would go by until 52 seconds left when Gage Stratman would hit Bacon for a 30-yard touchdown pass, Jacobson would run in the 2 point conversion to take a 16-14 score into the halftime break.

Spencer would increase its lead in the third quarter on a 2 yard run by Bacon but importantly Jacobson would come up short on the two-point conversion making the score 22-14.

That score would hold until 4:40 left in the 4th when Klement would break off a 50 yard run for a touchdown, Schmitt would hit Karl for the 2 point conversion to tie the game at 22.

Spencer would drive down inside the Colby 5-yard line but could not convert before time expired.

In overtime, SC would again get down to the one but was stuffed on 4th and goal.

On the first play of Colby’s overtime possession, Klement would run in from 20 yards out to seal the 28-22 victory.
