Colby (OnFocus) – A battle of neighboring cities. Two programs with relatively little recent history against one another. Abbotsford and Colby squared off in nonconference girls basketball Monday afternoon, and in a tightly contested game throughout, Colby prevailed with a hard-fought 45-43 win.

The Falcons scored on their opening possession with a three-pointer from Catie Clement. Abby built its biggest lead of the half at 7 points when Sydney Falteisek scored a bucket with 9:30 left in the first half, followed by assisting Mya Ruesch on Abby’s next possession. Colby fought back to take a 21-20 halftime lead with a three pointer from Trista Meyer and basket from Lexi Underwood.

The Falcons came out on fire to open the second half, and Clement’s five points in 27 seconds pushed the lead back to seven with 14:23 remaining.

Clement led all scorers with 21 points.

The Falcons’ lead remained at seven with seven minutes to go, but it was the Colby defense that made a difference down the stretch.

The relentless full court pressure from the Hornets forced Abbotsford turnovers throughout the game, but kept Colby in the game in the second half.

When Brett Schmitt drained a pair of free throws with 2:50 remaining, it set the stage for a tight battle down the stretch.

Colby was able to pull away by getting to the free throw line in the final minutes, taking advantage of being in the double bonus.

Underwood’s steal and layup with 1:30 remaining, and then draining a pair of free throws 19 seconds later pushed the Colby lead to 45-40. Abbotsford’s attempts to pull any closer were thwarted until the final second, when Clement made three free throws with .3 seconds remaining to end the game’s scoring.

Underwood led Colby with 12 points.

Colby was 13 of 22 from the free-throw line, with the Falcons making just 4 of 12 free throws.
