MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – The City of Marshfield has filled the vacant City Planner position, hiring Steven Wiley formerly of the City of Oshkosh.

Wiley brings a background in architecture as well as extensive knowledge of housing developments.

The New Holstein high school grad completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Architecture from UW-Milwaukee. He then was hired as an Assistant City Planner in February of 2017 for the City of Oshkosh. In March of 2020, Wiley was promoted to Associate Planner for the City.

Wiley said he’s particularly proud of the a few projects he got a chance to work on while working in Oshkosh.

“I was able to help with my architectural background in facilitating some stuff with the historic preservation commission,” Wiley said. “I was able to work on and refine our housing programs that we administered there.”

Wiley began with the City of Marshfield on Nov. 22 and has already been involved in certain projects.

Associate Planner Emmett Simkowski and Development Services Director Josh Miller have made Wiley’s transition to the new job seamless. He is looking forward to learning how the City works and the areas that could use some help.

“It’s a step up in responsibility I think and it’ll allow me to work in areas of planning that I haven’t been able to yet,” Wiley said. “It’s a new community for me so it’ll be nice to branch out and meet people.”

Moving from a larger operation in Oshkosh to a smaller, more diverse department here in Marshfield is a welcome sight for Wiley as he tries to learn more about the various responsibilities of the Development Services department.

“It allows you to get more experience in different areas and dig deeper in that experience in multiple areas rather than strictly specializing in one area,” Wiley said.

Marshfield’s housing crisis will be a main focus of Wiley’s as he comes with a background in housing development in Oshkosh.

“In the strategic plan I know there is a discussion in there to try to create some affordable housing programs,” Wiley said. “I worked on those in Oshkosh. They were created before I came but I did help administer them and refine them with other staff. I think that it would be exciting to do something similar here.”
