Marshfield, WI (OnFocus) More than 100,000 firefighters helped “Fill the Boot” last year for the Muscular Dystrophy Association last year, raising $20 million toward research, treatment centers, and summer camp.
Marshfield Firefighters Local 1021 will once again be present with a fire truck at the Dairyfest Mayor’s Breakfast this Friday to help raise funds for the cause. “The community is very generous when it comes to donating to MDA, and it’s greatly appreciated,” said Fire Chief Scott Owen.
Fill the Boot has been a firefighter tradition for 65 years through efforts by local International Association of Firefighters (IAFF). Through these funds, three new drugs have been approved and more are expected to be released in the next few years than in the last fifty, according to the campaign website. Such treatments are life-changing for muscular dystrophy patients who may struggle even with breathing.
Besides Dairyfest, Local 1021 also raises funds for MDA in the fall at Festival Foods during their annual “Pumpkin Blowout.”
