Students Recognized for Reading Accomplishments

(OnFocus) While it was unable to host a breakfast this year since schools closed due to COVID-19, the Central Fire and EMS District made sure to reward students who participated in its Blazing the Way to Literacy program.

Started three years ago by former Chief Bert Nitzke, the literacy program encourages students in grades kindergarten through 5th grade to track their reading times throughout the school year.

Those who read the most are usually picked up in a fire truck and treated to breakfast at the fire station at the end of the year.

“Since the school year was cut short this year, we were not sure what to do,” said Lenora Mueller, Firefighter/EMT. “We wanted to reward the students for all their hard work and not disappoint them.”

This year, with support from parents, 21 students from Colby Elementary, Abbotsford Elementary, Abbotsford Christian Academy, and St. Mary’s were invited to the fire station on Monday night to receive a McDonald’s gift card and a ride in the fire trucks.

“It was a cold and rainy night, but I think they all had a good time,” Mueller said.
