Boy Scout Installs 75 Birdhouses Along Mill Creek Trail

Marshfield, WI (OnFocus) Those walking along the Mill Creek Trail on the south side of Marshfield may notice a few more birds in the future.

Marshfield High School graduate Mike Beil, Troop 391, undertook the construction of 75 birdhouses to install along the trail and started placing them last week with help from his troop, family, and friends.

“It benefits park users by the ability to see all the birds there,” he said. “The project is more for nature. The reason I chose this project is because of the lack of birdhouses on the trail.”

Depending on where they are placed, the birdhouses appeal to wrens, chickadees, swallows, and bluebirds.

“The birdhouses are placed amongst some of the trees, sign posts, and the rest will be placed in the open,” he said, “far enough so the Parks and Recreation Department doesn’t have problems with them when plowing snow.”

Beil built the birdhouses with screws, galvanized nails, 2″ x 4″ boards, OSB boards, concrete anchors, and some electrical conduits and clamps. Donations came from G&D Industries, Ron Meyers and Sons Excavating, Marawood Construction, Shaw’s Wrecking Yard LLC and his uncle.

For the project to move forward, Beil needed permission from the Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Committee and the local BSA Council.

Currently Beil with the completion of the project will work to earn two more merit badges, one of which is almost complete.
