Auburndale Takes Down Greenwood on Game’s Final Play

Greenwood (OnFocus) – A see-saw affair saw Auburndale’s Hunter Wright connect with Alex Wilfahrt on a 28 yard score with no time remaining to give Auburndale a 32-26 win over Greenwood in 8-man football.

Sully Whitford put Greenwood on top early with a 7 yard run. Wright then gave Auburndale a 12-8 lead with a 11 yard pass to Kaiden Hoffman and a one yard run.

Right before the half, the Indians went back on top when Whitford scored from one yard out with just over a minute left.

The Eagles took back the lead with five minutes to go in the third quarter when Wright connected with Tim Schmidt for a 24 yard scoring strike. Wright’s conversion gave Auburndale a 20-14 lead.

Auburndale’s 30 yard run by Terrance Roberson gave Auburndale a 26-14 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

Greenwood fought right back, however, with Whitford adding a 15 yard touchdown run. Whitford had 87 yards on 14 carries  to go along with his three touchdown runs. He also had 3 receptions for 48 yards to lead Greenwood.

After the ensuing kickoff was recovered by the Indians, they methodically marched down the field. Trailing 26-20, the Indians tied it up at 26 when Cooper Bredlau scored on a 1 yard run with 34 seconds left.

Wright then took center stage and took Auburndale down the field in a hurry. His 37 yard pass to Schuyler Gilhausen with 21 seconds to go put the Eagles in scoring position.

With just 8 seconds left to go in the game, and facing a third and eight, Wright’s toss to Willfahrt in the end zone was a miraculous grab that gave Auburndale the win with time expired.

Wright was 7 of 10  for 156 yards and three touchdown passes, along with a rushing touchdown. Kaiden Hoffman led the Eagles in receiving with 3 catches for 57 yards.

Auburndale outgained Greenwood on the ground, 262 to 182, collecting 325 total yards of offense. Leading the way on the ground was Roberson, who rushed for 120 yards on 15 carries.

Greenwood had 338 yards of total offense. Cooper Bredlau was 5 of 13 for 64 yards.

Leading Greenwood in rushing was Xander Hinker, who had 111 yards on 14 carries.

Alex Willfahrt and Cooper Bredlau each had an interception in the game.
