Auburndale football dominates Marathon, keeps playoff hopes alive

AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale football team earned a must-win on Friday night to keep its WIAA playoff hopes alive, pounding Marathon 35-6 at Auburndale High School.

The Apaches improve to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the Marawood Conference with their second-straight win. Marathon drops to 2-4 and 1-2 in the conference.

Auburndale plays at Stratford next Friday, Sept. 28, and finishes its Marawood schedule at home against Chequamegon on Oct. 5, needing to win one of two to be playoff eligible.

Auburndale quarterback Cooper Weinfurter completed eight of 10 passes for 88 yards and four touchdowns, three to Dylan Paun of 10, 24 and 1 yards. The other was to Carter Wilcott for 14 yards.

Marathon scored first on its opening possession and from there it was all Apaches and they put up 35 unanswered points.

Trayton Weister rushed for 154 yards and a score to lead the Auburndale offense.

The Apaches held Marathon to just 120 total yards and five first downs in a dominant performance.

Next week’s game at Tiger Stadium in Stratford begins at 7 p.m.
