Submitted to OnFocus – WAUSAU, Wis. – Bicycling is one of the best ways to get exercise, see the beautiful sites of the Wisconsin and also a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. Whether you’re 5 or 60, a bicycle is your ticket to healthy fun.

“Biking offers a wealth of health benefits,” said Aspirus Physical Therapist Andrew Rawlsky. “Biking is a great workout and keeps you active. If you’re new to fitness or bouncing back from an injury to your bones, joints, ligaments or muscles, you can cycle at a pace that best fits your needs.”

All you have to do is hop on your bike, hit the pedals and go. But wait, not so fast! Even if you’ve ridden a thousand times before, it’s worth checking out these safety tips from Aspirus:

Protect your head. Wear a helmet. Helmets appropriate for bicycling should be worn by everyone – adults and children on every ride regardless of length. Make sure the helmet fits properly or it may not protect your noggin in a crash.

Been seen. Stay alert. Consider getting a flashing light for your bike for low-visibility situations. At a minimum, install front and back reflectors and dress in bright clothing. Whenever possible, ride during the day.

Follow the rules of the road: Stop at stop signs and traffic lights. Just like motorists, cyclists must obey signs, signals and lane markings. Making sure you know the traffic laws and remain alert.

Go with the flow. Ride on the right, in the same direction as other traffic. Never ride against it.

Watch for hazards. Keep an eye out for parked cars. Doors can open suddenly. Watch for cars backing out of driveways and be ready to avoid potholes, rocks and other debris.

Ride a bike that fits. A bike that’s too big can be difficult for you or your children to control. Check with your local bike shop for tips on purchasing the right size. Having your bike looked at or tuned up each year is a big plus.

“Bicycling can enhance your fitness level and your well-being. It’s great for managing pre-existing conditions and also preventing any health concerns. Bicycling is a great option for those who have stiffness or joint concerns including your hips and knees,” Rawlsky said.
