Alternate Season State Girls Golf Championships Preview

Kohler (OnFocus) –   The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association alternate season State Girls Golf Championships will be held Monday and Tuesday, May 17-18, at The Meadows Valley Course at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wis. Competition will begin at 1:30 p.m. Monday and resume Tuesday at 10 a.m.

SPECTATOR POLICY:  There is no cost for admission, and attendance is unlimited and open to the public. In continuing efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, spectators will be required to wear facemasks while on the course grounds.

THE FORMAT:  The alternate season revised competition format features one division with four qualifying teams and an additional six individual qualifiers competing. Competitors play 36 holes, weather permitting, including 18 holes on each day. The lowest scores from the first day will have the later tee times Tuesday.

BY THE NUMBERS:  There were 38 teams sponsoring girls golf this fall with 35 participating in the tournament series. The alternate girls golf season this spring is an opportunity provided to fall sports by the Board of Control in response to local participation concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic.

HOW THEY QUALIFIED:  The State Tournament field of teams and individuals is comprised of the first two teams and the top three individuals, who are not members of a qualifying team, in both of the two sectionals.

TEAMS COMPETING:  The schools qualifying for the alternate season State meet are Bay Port, Janesville Craig, Middleton and Sheboygan North/South.

INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS:  The six individuals who have qualified for the alternate season State meet are senior Jolie Guyette of De Pere, junior Angelina Myhr of Madison La Follette, sophomore Hannah Dunk of Milton, seniors Hailee Brunk and Grace Miller of Oshkosh North and senior Caylie Kotlowski of Stoughton.

INDIVIDUAL PREVIEW:  Senior  Jo Baranczyk of Bay Port seeks her third State individual championship after winning medalist honors in 2018 and 2019. She also placed fifth at State as a freshman in 2017. Senior Caylie Kotlowski of Stoughton qualifies for the State Tournament for the third time after placing fourth in 2018 and tying for 34th in 2019. Senior Glenna Sanderson of Middleton is back in the State meet looking to improve on her ninth-place finish in 2019 after finishing 18th in 2018. Senior Kallie Lux of Janesville Craig has qualified this alternate season following a 13th-place standing in 2019, which came on the heels of a 28th-place finish in 2018. Junior Ellie Frisch of Middleton is another returning player that placed in the top-20 in 2019, finishing 18th. She also finished 20th in 2018. Another senior attempting to contend for individual honors is Grace Miller of Oshkosh North. She placed 20th in 2019.

LAST FALL:  Brookfield Central captured the Division 1 State team title with a 27-hole score of 516. Arrowhead and Waunakee were runners-up at 526. Jessica Guiser of Arrowhead won a playoff to earn medalist honors with a 27-hole score of 119. Elise Hoven of Cedarburg finished second. Prescott was the team champion in Division 2 with a 27-hole score of 560. The Prairie School was runner-up at 579. Individually, Lauren Haen of Xavier won the title with a 27-hole score of 125, one stroke better than Ava Salay of Prescott, who placed second.THROUGH THE YEARS:  In the first 48 years of the girls golf championships, Edgewood has won the most team championships with 15, all coming since 2001. The Crusaders won two championships when only one division was offered in 2001-02 and the first seven Division 2 titles from 2003-09. They added to their total with championships from 2011-14 and again the last two seasons. Madison West and La Crosse Central are tied for the second-most team titles with five. The Regents won the first five championships offered from 1972-76. The Red Raiders won four consecutive State titles from 1990-93 and added their fifth in 1998. Appleton West, Arrowhead and Homestead have won four team championships. Osceola has crowned the most individual medalists with eight, and Madison Memorial is next in line with six individual champions.
