PRESS RELEASE-UW INCIDENT

From Marshfield Police Department: On 12/17 at approximately 455 pm Marshfield Police were dispatched to a man with a gun at UW Stevens Point – Marshfield Campus. Two students reported a disoriented male with what appeared to be a handgun in his jacket pocket. The man was wearing a green stocking cap and appeared lost looking for a staircase.

Officers from Marshfield, State Patrol, Wood County assisted with evacuating, clearing, and searching the campus for this subject. Through investigation, it was learned that the campus is open to walkers in cold weather. The suspect was later identified as a local male who was walking within the building, became lost, and asked two students for directions out of the building. Police have confirmed that the subject did not have possession of a weapon on campus although the man did have gloves protruding out of his jacket pocket.

We commend the students for reporting suspicious behavior and encourage everyone to report if they have concerns over what appear to be abnormal. We also thank UW Stevens Point Police and the community for their sharing of information through social media and the many involved media outlets.
