8 Local Wrestlers Still Alive in D1 Individual State Tournament

Many local Wrestlers battled it out on Day 1 of the 2020 WIAA Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Division 1

At 106, Preston Spray of Wisconsin Rapids won his first two matches, moving into the semifinals, first downing Noah Tonsor of Slinger by Major Decision 9-1. Spray then took down Riley Nilo of Milton by decision 4-2.

At 113, Justin Groshek of SPASH won his first two matches, moving into the semifinals. First Groschek won by fall over Josh Strinesky of Badger, then Groshek took down Brent Miller of Germantown by fall.

At 120 Marshfield’s Kevan Cliver is into the semifinals with two decisions. First Cliver won 3-2 over Gavin Cagle of Whitnall/Greendale, then taking down Brett Skaug of Brookfield East

Also at 120, Kale Roth of Stevens Point is into the Wrestle Backs. Roth won his first-round match by fall against Jacob Bruner of Pewaukee, then lost by fall to Nicolar Rivera of Stoughton.

At 126, Hoyt Blaskowski is into the wrestle backs. Blaskowski won his first-round match against Liam Hughes of Marquette Univ. High School by fall, Then fell to Hayden Halter of Waterford by major decision 10-0

At 132, Brett Franklin of Marshfield is in the wrestle backs. Franklin lost his first-round match by major decision 12-2 to Tyler Goebel of Mukwonago, Goebel advanced allowing Franklin to survive.

At 138, Marshfield’s Gabe Pugh is out of the tournament, he lost his first-round match by Sudden Victory 9-7 against Andrew Lopez of De Pere, Lopez lost his second-round match eliminating Pugh from the tournament.

At 145, Marshfield’s Ryan Dolezal is out of the tournament, he lost his first-round match by fall to Berhett Statz of Waunakee. Statz then lost his second-round match eliminating Dolezal.

At 152, Wyler Lubeck of Wisconsin Rapids is in the wrestle backs. Lubeck won his first-round match by fall, then lost his second-round match Luke Mechler of Stoughton.

At 182, Brett Johnston is out of the tournament, he lost his first-round match to Tommy Maurice of Brookfield Central, when Maurice lost his second-round match Johnston was out of the tournament.

At 195, Andrew Schutz of WI Rapids Lincoln is in the wrestle backs. Schutz lost his first-round match to Zach Wallace of Burlington when Wallace advanced Schultz dropped into the wrestle backs.
