For Marshfield (OnFocus) – Under the hazy warmth of an August Sunday morning, 55 WISPORT/Badger State Games bicycle racers from WI, MN and England aged 13 to 77 stood astride their bikes at the base of the east ascent of Powers Bluff ready to attack the 45 mile “2020 Bluff to Bluff Road Bicycle” race course.
A lead peloton of 35 men and women quickly formed revealing the impressive strength and skill within. The first 12 miles of the race experienced few attacks out of deep respect for the final mile Powers Bluff climb to the finish enabling the peloton to remain intact to the base of Cary Bluff.
Sadly, at mile nine, overall Women’s favorite Jenny Youngwerth flatted out of the race creating an opportunity for Marie Streich to capture the Women’s Race awards. The East Ascent of Cary Bluff, with the prized King of Mountain (KOM) Preem at the top, created huge pressure in the lead peloton resulting in a break of nine.
Over the next miles the nine escapees were successfully reeled in by the chase group of 26. At mile 32, a strong organized team attack resulted in the escape of 11 who stayed away to the finish on the top of Powers Bluff.
Two “Preems” were awarded – Men/Women “KOM” at top of Cary Bluff at mile 13 and Men/Women “Sprint” at mile 25. Both were captured by Chase Wark and Marie Steich respectively.
