Suspect a Former Employee at Cemetery

There were three victims of a shooting that took place in Wausau this morning. At 8:30 a.m., Wausau Police responded to Pine Grove Cemetery and discovered three victims.

One victim was found dead at the scene and two others were transported to Wausau Aspirus Hospital for treatment. Officials declined to comment on the condition of those two victims at this time. The victims were employees of the cemetery or else related to an employee.

Callers reported that a possible suspect was fleeing to the east side of the cemetery. Officers and deputies arrived and establish a perimeter. The suspect was quickly located and taken into custody without further incident.

In a press conference, the Wausau Chief of Police revealed that the male suspect is a Schofield and Fullmer Street resident and is a former employee of the cemetery. He will make an initial appearance tomorrow in Marathon County Court.

There was only one shooter, who used a handgun which was found and recovered in the area of the cemetery.

At 8:14 a.m., Everest Metro Police responded to a fire on Fullmer Street at an apartment complex. The two incidents were stated to be connected and the fire is being treated as suspicious. While on scene, there was a report of a gas leak in a nearby building. Precautionary measures were taken and residents of the apartment complexes were evacuated.

Once that scene is secure, Everest Metro Police will work with Wausau Police Department and the Marathon County District Attorney’s office to obtain search warrants. Those will be executed yet today.

The public is asked to stay away from the scene and to contact either department, or Crime Stoppers, with any info that may be helpful to the case.

More information will be released tomorrow.
