Stratford has four, Spencer/Columbus and Marshfield one reach semifinals at 2019 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament

MADISON – Stratford had four wrestlers move on to the semifinals, and have three others are still alive in the consolation brackets after competition Friday morning and afternoon at the 2019 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center.

Marshfield had two move on to the consolation semifinals as well, and Spencer/Columbus senior Logan Zschernitz will also wrestle in the semifinals Friday night.

Zschernitz, the defending Division 2 285-pound champion, remained perfect this season at 44-0 by pinning Michael Douglas of Belmont/Platteville in just 45 seconds in a D-2 quarterfinal match.

Zschernitz will take on Daniel Enloe (33-11) of Belleville/Montello/New Glarus in a semifinal Friday night.

Stratford’s Manny Drexler, Max Schwabe and Dylan Schoenherr won Division 3 quarterfinals Friday afternoon to move on to semifinal matches.

Drexler, a two-time state runner-up, improved to 44-4 with a 5-2 win over Henry Amborn of Burlington Catholic Central. He will take on Tristen Mascarette (39-5) of Florence/Niagara in a 120-pound semifinal.

Schwabe (45-2) pinned Brant Cracraft (29-14) of Mishicot in 3:51 in a 132-pound quarterfinal. Schwabe will wrestle Aidan Nutter (38-7) of Fennimore in the semifinals.

Trevor Dennee, also a runner-up a year ago, moved to 45-1 this season by pinning Ausitn McCurdy of St. Croix Falls in a 170-pound quarterfinal in 1:02. Dennee will take on undefeated Ryan Neu (38-0) of Dodgeland in the semifinals.

Schoenherr (46-3) pinned Tanner Gaffey of St. Croix Falls in 2:39 in a 285-pound quarterfinal and will see a familiar face in the semifinals, going up against Marawood Conference foe Mitchell Gore (33-9) of Athens. Gore beat Bryce Friday of Markesan, 13-7, in the quarterfinals.

Mavrick Licciardi (145), Derek Marten (152), and Devin Dennee (160) also secured state medals by winning a consolation match after losing in the quarterfinals for Stratford. The three will wrestle in consolation semifinals on Saturday morning and can finish any where between third and sixth place.

Stratford sophomore Jacob Heiden (31-11) was eliminated from the state tournament after losing a consolation quarterfinal to Kolbe Ubersox of Darlington/Black Hawk, 9-3.

Marshfield seniors Nolan Hertel and Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann also stayed alive for medals in the Division 1 field after winning two consolation matches.

Hertel (43-3 at 152 pounds), a four-time state qualifier, will earn his first medal, while Schwanebeck-Ostermann (45-2 at 182) will secure his second to go along with a fourth-place medal he won last year.

Senior Tanner Kanable lost in the 138-pound consolation quarterfinals and finishes the season 40-9, while freshman Ryan Dolezal (29-9) was eliminated in the first consolation round, losing a 132-pound match to Josiah Lynden of Mukwonago.

Marshfield senior Sam Mitchell (44-1) will take on Charlie Hooyman (44-3) of De Pere in a Division 1 195-pound semifinal on Friday night.
