I’m Branden Bodendorfer and you’re watching On Focus, where we recap the news that matters to you.

The temperature is changing, and for classes at Auburndale High School, that means tapping trees. In March, the wildlife and horticulture classes along with 4th graders marked and tapped the maple trees at Auburndale School Forest. This involves drilling holes, attaching bags, and measuring the sugar content of the sap. Freezing night and warm day temperatures make the sap run through the tree. Classes of all ages take advantage of the school forest for activities like snowshoeing, tree and plant identification, and discovery.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Wisconsin (BBBSCW) hosted their 2nd annual A Little Gala for A Big Cause fundraising event on March 17th. It was a wonderful evening that will not soon be forgotten. This year’s event was St. Patrick’s Day themed and included a silent and live auction, fund a need, and wine pull. Along with fundraising efforts, guests were able to hear from participants in the mentoring program, including a parent and Big Brother and learn how one-to-one mentoring impacts children in Wood County.

The Wood County Board met on March 20th and the first issue that was taken up was a resolution to direct the Highway, Parks and Forestry, and Planning and Zoning departments to work together to improve the ATV/UTV trail system in Wood County. The board also voted to make a major change to the County Board rules, which now allows the committee members to elect their own chairs, instead of the County Board Chair. The resolution passed 10-9.

(Now a brief look at the weather, sponsored by Marshfield Insurance.)

According to a release from the School District of Marshfield, at a Special Meeting held on March 22, 2018, the Board of Education accepted the retirement request of Dr. Deidre “Dee” Wells by a vote of 5 – yes, 0 – no. Dr. Wells’ retirement is effective June 30, 2018.

And our number 1 story of the week:

On Tuesday, March 27th common council heard from Renee Schulz, Executive Director of the Personal Development Center, for a request to consider a one-time donation of $80,000 for the purchase of a building left vacant by St. Vincent De Paul. Alderman Hendler made the first motion to postpone considerations to the next council meeting in April, due to this being a sensitive issue and to allow for the elections to take place. Alderman Tom Witzel made a second motion. The motion failed 3 – 6, after only gaining additional support from Alderman Earll.
