In early March, the class of 2018 musicians traveled to NYC where they experienced the BIG city! While in New York, students saw a Broadway show, toured the United Nations, attended an opera at The Metropolitan Opera, visited Rockefeller Center, and toured NBC studios. Thank you to all students and chaperones for making this a successful and memorable trip!

History Club

On Wednesday May 9th the history club took a field trip to the EAA (Experimental Aviation Museum) in Oshkosh. While there, students were introduced to various forms of aviation since the Wright brothers first flight in 1903. Planes ranged from the beginning of aviation through World War II and into the modern SpaceShipOne missions.

Spanish Club and Art Club

Pictured are members of the Spencer High School Spanish Club and Art Club at the St. Paul Festival of Nations on May 3rd. Students on the trip experienced cultures from around the world. They had their choice of foods from 35 countries, they could watch performers from Germany, Ireland, Turkey, Greece, and Native Americans, they purchased artwork made by people from Bolivia, Taiwan, and other countries, they watched weavers and potters at work, and they were able to witness a naturalization ceremony as 40 new citizens took the oath to become members of the United States of America. We plan to take this trip again next year.

Middle School Physical Education

Spring is here, and with the warm weather the Middle School Physical Education program is heating up. Students have spent the winter months performing strength and conditioning activities to enhance strength, build flexibility, and help their overall fitness levels. Along the way, students have also learned many new games and activities. The Middle School students are all excited to take their new skills to outdoor activities as we near the end of the school year and into the summer. GO ROCKETS!

Title I Reading News

The last chapter of the 2017 / 2018 school year at Spencer Elementary is just about complete. What another successful, eventful year this has been!

The annual Family Fun Fest was held November 9th from 5 – 6:30 p.m. Students and parents were engaged in the activities created by teachers from Grades Pre-K through Fifth Grade. This year, the Student Council volunteered to help ‘man’ some of the stations, including distributing the sack lunch provided at the event. There were drawings for Activity Baskets as well as Door Prizes to attend the Missoula Children’s Theater for the production of Jack and the Beanstalk. Congratulations to all our Spencer Family winners!

Mark your calendar for next year’s Family Fun Fest to be held Thursday November 8 th from 5 – 6:30 p.m. in the ‘BIG’ gym. Plan on being there! Students were assessed in September / January / April this year using DIBELS in Grades Kindergarten through Second Grade. Teachers used this test to evaluate Phonemic / Phonological aptitude as well as Oral Reading fluency. Progress Monitoring was administered between testing periods, making sure students were working toward EOY goals.

As the Title I Reading Teacher, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the importance of maintaining a solid reading habit over the summer. Children of all ages should take advantage of the wonderful opportunities the warm, summer weather offers which should include a daily dose of leisure reading. This not only reinforces the important reading skills already learned, but helps maintain…even helps…increase fluency.
Happy Summer!
See everyone in September!

Collect Cans for Fourth Grade Capital Trip

Please help the Fourth grade students raise the money for their annual field trip to our beautiful state capital, Madison. This is the only fund raiser that we do to help pay for our trip in May. Please find it in your hearts to donate your aluminum cans to our can cage which is located in the Elementary School parking lot off of Highway C. Thanks for all your help as this trip is not funded by the School District of Spencer.

School Forest

The Spencer School District’s largest school forest is almost one hundred acres of peace, solitude, and serenity, just waiting to help you un-stress and enjoy a few moments away from the hustle and bustle of the everyday rat-race. You can sit in the sun or shade by the small lake, or get on one of the many trails to enjoy a nature walk. Although the gate for vehicles may be locked, you can park your car and walk in just about any time there is daylight. Whether you go north, east, west, or south, there is always something interesting to see, and best of all, there is never a quiz or test on what you discover!
