Marshfield sending one singles player, two doubles team to sectionals after competition at WIAA Division 1 Tomah subsectional

TOMAH – Marshfield will be sending one singles player and two doubles teams on to sectionals after competing at the WIAA Division 1 Boys Tennis Subsectional on Monday at Tomah High School.

Those reaching the semifinals in No. 1 singles and doubles, and the finals in all of the other flights, qualify for the Division 1 sectional on Wednesday at Wisconsin Rapids. The top four finishers in No. 1 singles and doubles, and the winners of No. 2 singles and doubles at the sectional will move on to the 2019 WIAA State Individual Boys Tennis Tournament in Madison on May 30-June 1.

The top team in the sectional will qualify for the 2019 WIAA State Team Boys Tennis Tournament in Madison on June 7-8.

Marshfield’s lone singles player to make it through was No. 3 player Ryan Paulman. He is now 11-1 this season after a 6-2, 7-5 victory over La
Crosse Central’s Nathan Janvrin on Monday to advance.

Marshfield’s No. 1 doubles team of Jared Cordova and Will Fay improve to 12-1 as it reached the No. 1 doubles semifinals via a bye and will also move on to sectionals.

The Tigers’ No. 2 doubles team of Lucas Paulman and Sam Roherty are also moving on after reaching the finals, and are now 12-2 this season after a pair of wins. Paulman-Roherty had a 6-1, 6-1 victory over La Crosse Central’s team of Lingo Vue/Zach Acklin, and a 6-4, 7-5 win over Onalaska’s Chase Podurgiel/Joe Griebel.

Marshfield finished second in the team standings with 16 points, four behind Onalaska. The subsectional points carry over into the sectional, where the top team earns a spot at the state team tournament.
