Marshfield Junior Legion baseball wins 17U Regional opener

NEKOOSA – A number of miscues by Holmen helped push the Marshfield Post 54 Junior Legion baseball team to a win in its 17U Regional opener on Friday afternoon as it won 4-3 with a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Peter Earll reached on a dropped third strike with one out, Chase Higgins followed with a single to advance Earll to third, and Earll came in on a wild pitch to provide the winning margin for the Blue Devils (19-5).

Marshfield will play either Stevens Point or Wisconsin Rapids at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the double elimination tournament.

Holmen scored twice in the top of the first inning, but the Blue Devils responded with a run in the bottom of the frame as Nick Urban led off with a double, went to third on a Riley Bauman singled, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Logan Homolka.

After Holmen got the run back in the third, Marshfield tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

Max Heller singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ky Swanson, and scored when Urban singled and Heller was able to run home on an error. Later in the inning, Urban stole second, moved to third on an error on the play, and scored on a wild pitch.

The score remained tied until the seventh when the Blue Devils were able to pull out the victory.

Marshfield finished up its Wisconsin Valley Legion League schedule with a 5-1 win over Stevens Point at Jack Hackman Field in Marshfield.

Heller picked up the win for the Blue Devils (11-5 WVLL) with 3 2/3 innings of one-hit scoreless relief.
