GREEN BAY – The Marshfield boys soccer team outshot Green Bay Southwest, but couldn’t get one into the net and dropped a 2-0 decision in a WIAA Division 2 regional final Saturday night at Southwest High School.

Lucas Stieber scored on a penalty kick at the 12:24 mark and Khalid Sufi added another goal 13:24 before halftime for the game’s only goals.

Marshfield outshot the Jaguars 15-9 overall and 5-4 on goal, but were blanked.

“The boys played a strong game,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “Like always, we created some great chances. Early in the game we had a cross with a header by Sam Roherty off the inside of the post and somehow the goalie got his hand on it. They scored their first goal off an unfortunate hand ball in the box. Our player fell to the ground and the ball hit his arm as he was falling. They converted the PK.

“We had a few tremendous shots to a corner and upper corner by Kade McManus that their freshman goalkeeper managed to keep out. We really had a good run at the end of the year, too bad to have it end. The senior class was a great class, a great group of players and friends and they really made it fun for the whole team.”

Marshfield’s season ends with an 11-7-3 record. Green Bay Southwest (13-2-4) moves on to a D-2 sectional semifinal Thursday at home against Pulaski. Holmen and New Richmond play in the other sectional semifinal, with the winners meeting up in a sectional final Oct. 27 at Tomah.
