Marathon overcomes Auburndale’s 3-point shooting to win Marawood South girls basketball battle

MARATHON – The Auburndale girls basketball team turned to the long ball, but couldn’t make enough of them in its game against Marathon on Tuesday night.

The Apaches made 11 of 35 3-point attempts but fell in the end to Marathon 60-53 in a Marawood Conference South Division game at Marathon High School.

Georgi Schmutzer made 6 of 14 3-pointers to finish with 20 points, and Taylor Stanton drilled four 3-pointers and had 16 points for Auburndale (1-4, 0-3 Marawood South).

Auburndale led 29-24 at halftime but couldn’t overcome a strong second half from Marathon (2-2, 1-1 Marawood South), as the Raiders outscored the Apaches 36-24.

Bradyn Free had 19 points to lead the way for Marathon.

Auburndale is off until next Tuesday, Dec. 11, when it hosts Edgar.
