Iola-Scandinavia holds on for win

Iola-Scandinavia withstood a frantic comeback by Grantsburg in the fourth quarter and held on for a 27-25 victory Friday to advance to the WIAA Division 6 state championship game for the second straight season. Thunderbirds senior running back Bryce Huettner broke the state’s career record for rushing yards.

I-S built a 27-7 lead after three quarters, then held off Grantsburg’s 18-point barrage in the final period. Huettner rushed 33 times for 158 yards and two touchdowns. He upped his career yardage total to 6,714, breaking the state record of 6,707 by Hilbert’s Mike Firkus (2000-02).

The Thunderbirds (13-0) will play Racine Lutheran at 1 p.m. Thursday at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. I-S is looking for its first state title in its fourth all-time appearance in the championship game.
