Auburndale girls, Stratford’s Heeg earn state meet spots at WIAA Division 3 cross country sectional

STEVENS POINT – For the fourth-straight season, the Auburndale girls cross country team is heading to state.

The Auburndale girls had its top five runners finish in the top 20 overall and grab the team title at the WIAA Division 3 sectional cross country meet on Saturday at Standing Rock Park.

The Apaches finished with 62 points, nine better than Rosholt, which grabbed the other team spot at the 2018 WIAA State Cross Country Meet at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids, which will be next Saturday, Oct. 27. The Division 3 girls race will begin at 2:25 p.m.

Isabella Jewell finished sixth in 20:56.7 and Erricka Zenner took ninth in 21:09.3 to give the Auburndale girls a pair of top-10 finishes.

Mckenna Zieher finished 14th in 21:30.8, Macie Schmeiser was 16th in 21:36.9 and Jordyn Karl took 20th in 21:53.0 to round out the scoring runners for the Apaches, who finished fourth at the state meet last year.

Stratford finished 13th, Spencer was 14th and Marshfield Columbus Catholic was 15th in the girls team standings.

Emily Wehrman led Spencer, taking 57th in 24:23.7; Sarah Zuelke was 58th in 24:35.5 for Stratford’s top finish; and Melanie Lang took 76th in 25:40.2 to lead Columbus Catholic.

Stratford junior James Heeg earned an individual spot at the state meet with a 10th-place finish in the boys race in 17:34.4. He grabbed the final of the five individual qualifying spots in the boys field.

The Stratford boys finished fifth in the team standings as Isaac Thompson took 25th (18:42.2) and Cade Brueswitz was 38th (19:16.9) to give the Tigers three top-40 finishes.

Marshfield Columbus Catholic finished ninth and Spencer was 16th in the team standings. Auburndale did not have a complete team.

Rosholt (47 points) and Wisconsin Rapids Assumption (80) earned the top two spots in the team standings, and the subsequent state meet berths.

Bryce Fuerlinger was the Dons’ top runner, taking 22nd in 18:37.9; Carl Lundgren was 31st in 19:04.1 for Auburndale’s top finish; and Ashton Ackman was 60th in 20:20.7 for Spencer.

The Division 3 boys race at the state meet will be at 12:35 p.m. on Saturday.

Adam Rzentkowski of Rosholt won the boys race in 16:17.3 and Marissa Ellenbecker of Edgar was the girls winner in 19:28.2.
