AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale boys basketball team survived a defensive battle, topping Thorp 40-31 to win a WIAA Division 4 regional championship on Friday night at Auburndale High School.

The Apaches (19-5) move on to a D-4 sectional semifinal against Marawood Conference South Division rival Marathon (20-4) on Thursday. The game is scheduled to be played at Westfield, but may be moved closer to the area. Auburndale and Marathon split a pair of conference games this season.

With leading scorers Colton Wright (seven points) and Cooper Weinfurter (four points) bottled up and combining to go just 3-for-13 shooting, someone else had to step up and it was Hunter Wright.

Wright scored a game-high 17 points, making 7 of 9 free throws, to lead the way for the Apaches.

Auburndale shot just 33 percent (12 of 36), but held Thorp to only 10 made field goals.

Anthony Hunt led Thorp (15-10) with 12 points.
