His N Her Salon in Auburndale has been a community staple since it opened in 1985. Over thirty years later, owner Mary Bauer continues to serve her longtime clients with affordable haircuts, perms, and color services.
Bauer took over the business in 1990 from her retired employer and is assisted by one other employee, Sandy. Having grown up in Auburndale, she knows a great many locals and some from surrounding communities like Marshfield and Wisconsin Rapids through the salon.
“It’s a small town atmosphere,” Bauer said. “You get to know their families and just have that bond with people you also go to church with or see at sporting events. You see people at a lot of different parts of their life.”
Starting out, the business was an ideal occupation as a young mother and wife to a dairy farmer. Though both her children are out of college, Bauer still has plenty of energy left for the salon and has no plans to retire anytime soon. It’s good news for her longtime clients, which number just as many men as women.
“We keep with what the people in the town want,” she said.
